The LP Derivatives immerses itself in a vast library of electronic and experimental musics, created by other artists and absorbed into the artistic consciousness of guitarist Coleman Goepfert. The echoing remnants of these works, sketches transmuted by memory and imagination, form the eponymous derivatives, themselves then further contorted through continuous procedures of alienation, transfiguration, and aggregation. Primary sources for this sonic distillation included the works of Merzbow, Julien Desprez & Luís Lopes, Nate Wooley, Tatsuya Nakatani, Alexander Schubert, and Stefan Prins.
The original compositions featured here are dense, tenacious, and unrelenting — reflections of the artist’s inner state during the period of recording. The complex aural tapestry of these pieces emerges from the interwoven strands of physical guitar performance and electronic manipulation. They revel in alienations of traditional guitar technique, in multi-layered strata of entangled electronic manipulations, and in the mutual augmentations of virtual and real worlds. The boundaries of reality and unreality blur with increasing momentum.
This record invites the listener to (re)imagine boundaries; to immerse themselves in the flickering reality and unreality of the electric guitar; and above all, to simply lose themselves in cascading waves of sound!
